Health Days 2021

World Suicide Prevention Day

Introduction:
World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) is observed on 10 September every year, in order to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides. The theme of this year, “Creating hope through action”, reflects the need for collective action to address this urgent public health issue
Facts:
  • More than 800,000 people die due to suicide every year. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-29 year-olds worldwide. There are indications that for each adult who died of suicide there may have been more than 20 others attempting suicide.
  • Suicides and suicide attempts have a ripple effect that impacts not only individuals, but also families, communities and societies. Suicide can be prevented, however. Key evidence-based suicide prevention measures include restricting access to means for suicide (e.g. firearms, pesticides, etc.), mental health and alcohol reduction policies, and promoting media reporting on suicide.
Objectives:
  • The overall goal of this day is to raise awareness about suicide prevention worldwide.
