World Hearing Day

​​Introduction:

Each year on March 3, WHO celebrates World Hearing Day to raise awareness and promote ear and hearing care across the world. On World Hearing Day 2020, WHO will highlight that timely and effective intervention can ensure that people with hearing loss are able to achieve their full potential. It will draw attention to the options available in this respect.

Facts:
  • More than 900 million people will suffer from hearing loss by 2050.
  • Around 466 million people worldwide have disabling hearing loss.
  • 60% of childhood hearing loss is due to preventable causes.
  • Excessive noise is the main cause of hearing loss.
  • Listening to music at high volumes for long periods of time may lead to permanent hearing loss.
Objectives:
  • At all life stages, communication and good hearing health connect us to each other, our communities, and the world.
  • For those who have hearing loss, appropriate and timely interventions can facilitate access to education, employment, and communication. 
  • Globally, there is a lack of access to interventions to address hearing loss, such as hearing aids.
  • Early intervention should be made available through health systems.
