World Children's Day

​​World Children’s Day was first established in 1954 and is celebrated on 20 November each year to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children’s welfare.

November 20th is an important date as it is the date in 1959 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. It is also the date in 1989 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Facts:
  • Since 1989, the number of deaths among children under 5 has decreased by more than 50%.
  • The number of undernourished children has decreased by 50% since 1990.
  • 2.6 billion children have gained access to an improved drinking water source compared to 1990.
  • 650 million girls were married before the age of 18.
  • 1 in 4 children worldwide will be living in areas with extremely limited water resources by 2040. 
Objectives:
  • Providing an environment in which all children are enrolled in school, safe from harm and able to fulfil their potential and dreams.
  • Boosting international cohesion and awareness among children around the world.
  • Raising awareness of children's rights and improving their well-being.
