World Food Safety Day

​​​Overview:

World Food Safety Day, is annually celebrated on June 7, to draw attention to the prevention and management of foodborne risks to contribute to food security, human health, economic prosperity, agriculture, market access, tourism, and sustainable development.
 
Objectives:
  • Strengthening global efforts for food safety to reduce the burden of foodborne diseases.
 Facts:
  • Obtaining adequate amounts of safe and nutritious food is key to maintaining life and promoting good health.
  • Food safety, nutrition, and food security are closely linked; unsafe food causes a vicious cycle of disease and malnutrition, particularly affecting infants, young children, the elderly, and the sick.
  • Unsafe foods containing bacteria, viruses, parasites or harmful chemicals cause more than 200 diseases - ranging from diarrhea to cancers.
  • An estimated 600 million people become sick after eating contaminated food, and 420,000 die every year.
  • Diarrheal diseases are the most common diseases resulting from the consumption of contaminated foods, causing 550 million people to become sick and 230,000 to die every year.
