26 February 2023

A medical team specializing in oral and maxillofacial surgery in Jeddah managed successfully to remove an ameloblastoma from the jaw of a Mu'tamir (Omrah Performer), in an 8-hour surgical operation.
Jeddah Health said that the emergency department of the medical complex received the case of a 60-year-old Mu'tamir, suffering from stiffness in the lower jaw and swelling in the face for more than two years. Clinical, laboratory and radiological examinations were conducted and samples were taken thereof. It was found that there was an ameloblastoma in the entire lower jaw with a size of 23 * 10 centimeters, which necessitated development of an appropriate treatment plan urgently and presentation of the case to departments of cardiology and anesthesiology for completion of pre-operative stages.
The team treating the case confirmed that the patient was prepared for a delicate surgery under general anesthesia to remove the tumor accurately and rebuild the jaw by implanting a metal bracket prepared to take the natural jaw shape while preserving all healthy tissues surrounding the tumor. Then, the patient was transferred to the inpatient department and followed up on the treatment plan by nursing teams and other specializations.
It is noteworthy that the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at King Abdullah Medical Complex (KAMC) in Jeddah performed 122 surgeries in the past year 2022.
