Medical Team Excises Rare Appendix from 2 Months Old Baby at Najran Maternity and Children Hospital
15 March 2017
In a rare case, a surgical team at the Maternity and Children Hospital in Najran has succeeded in excising a misplaced inflamed appendix from a 2-month old baby. Upon arrival at the hospital he was suffering from bronchitis and necessary tests on him revealed that he has bilateral inguinal hernia, and an exploratory procedure for the two regions found that there was an unexpected presence of purulent appendicitis in the hernial sac inside the scrotum.

The surgical team has successfully excised the appendix and repaired the hernia of the two sides, although the right inguinal hernia is not completely reversible when there is acute scrotum infection. Also the testicles were fixed in their normal position. Thanks to Allah, the baby's condition improved after the operation, and it was decided to discharge him from the hospital.

It is noteworthy that the percentage of the presence of appendix in the hernia sac is less than 1% and is known scientifically as Amyand's hernia, which is very rare in children and newborns.
