KFSH transplants kidney to 12kg child
14 February 2009
Kidney transplantation team at King Fahad Specialist Hospital (KFSH) in Dammam has successfully performed the first kidney transplantation operation in the Kingdom for a 4 years old 12kg child suffering from kidney failure due to congenital kidney atrophy.

Kidney transplantation specialist Dr. Mohammed Al-Maghrabi said the child had been following haemodialysis in Kuwait, where his mother lived, but due to lack of kidney transplantation units in Kuwait, he was transformed to KFSH, where all transfer and preparation arrangements were accomplished within a period of less than 6 months.

He said a team formed of KFSH executive director general Dr. Khalid M. Al-Shaibani, head of KFSH kidney transplantation program Dr. Mohammed Al-Sagheer, kidney transplantation surgery consultant Dr. Hanan Al-Ghamdi, cardiovascular surgery consultant Dr. Husam Abul Ainain, and kidney surgery assistant consultant Dr. Khaleel Alawi carried out the 80 minutes operation, where the kidney has been taken from the child's father.
