Overview:
The General Directorate of Infection Prevention and Control in Healthcare Facilities is implementing extensive activities in health facilities in all regions of the Kingdom to raise awareness of antimicrobials, increase awareness of the phenomenon of antimicrobial resistance globally, and encourage health practitioners in health facilities and those responsible for developing policies to adopt best practices to avoid the continued emergence of drug-resistant infections.
Objectives:
- Increase community awareness of antimicrobial resistance through effective communication, education, and training.
Facts:
- Antimicrobial resistance threatens the effectiveness of preventing and treating infections that are constantly increasing, caused by bacteria, parasites, viruses and fungi.
- The success of major surgeries and cancer chemotherapy are at risk without the availability of effective antibiotics.
- The costs of health care provided to patients with resistant infections are higher than the costs of caring for patients with non-resistant infections; due to the disease taking longer, additional tests being performed, and the use of more expensive medications.
