International Year of Fruits and Vegetables

​Overview 

The UN General Assembly have declared 2021 as the International Year of Fruits and Vegetables (IYFV). The IYFV 2021 is a rare opportunity to raise awareness on the important role of fruit and fresh produce in general when discussing food security, health and wellbeing and nutrition goals globally. 

Key Message 
To prompt people to adopt a diverse diet that incorporates a sufficient intake of fruits and vegetables on a daily basis.

Key Facts 
  • ​​Consuming at least 400g (or 5 meals) of fruits and vegetables daily is good for health. 
  • Integrate fruits and vegetables in your diet from an age as early as 6 months, and make them an integral part of your diet for the duration of your lifetime.
  • Fruits and vegetables are a good source of dietary fiber, vitamins and minerals, such as: folic acid, vitamin A, vitamin C and potassium, in addition to useful plant chemicals.
  • Fruits and vegetables, as part of an integrate diet, help mitigate the risk factors of non-communicable diseases, such as: overweight and obesity, chronic inflammation, hypertension, and high cholesterol.
