Diabetics during Hajj


Diabetes mellitus requires you to make simple effort to control blood sugar levels. Also, adhering to doing exercise and taking the tablets of lowering blood sugar (or insulin) regularly, will enable you to perform the Hajj rites, God willing, easily and safely. However, following are some awareness tips and guidelines for performing the Hajj rites rightly and safely:

  • You had better eat healthy meals as prescribed by your doctor; such that contain all the useful nutrients. And avoid being tempted to the foods served, which are not proper for your health status. You are supposed to disseminate daily portion of calories to three main meals, aside from the fast minor ones.
  • You have to care for your feet very well. This care includes hygiene and monitoring any changes undergoing the foot to evade infection. This is brought about by wearing socks and comfortable leather shoes, given the prevention of infection is much easier than treatment. But if you notice any injury, soreness or swelling you should see your doctor.
  • Try to regulate your sleep in this period, such that you don't sleep for less than 8 hours per day, because the lack of sleep weakens the body's resistance to germs and retard wound healing.
  • Do not forget that drinking a lot of water is very necessary in your case, because the diabetic is more prone to dehydration.
  • Caring for your teeth and gums is indispensable for diabetics. Therefore, brushing your teeth helps keep you away from mouth ulcers, and gums inflammation and bleeding.
  • It is advisable to care for your skin, since you are more susceptible to skin infections.
  • Bear in mind that the acceptable ratio of blood sugar is: 70-140 mg/dl.
  • Don't hesitate to see your doctor as soon as possible if you feel the symptoms of low or high blood sugar, or if you suffer from another casual illness, such as high temperature or severe diarrhea with urination; such symptoms may cause blood sugar to rise.
Symptoms of High Blood Sugar:
  • Frequent urination.
  • Frequent thirst.
  • Frequent itching.
  • Non-healing wound.
  • Loss of weight.
  • Stress and fatigue.
  • Numbness of limbs.
Symptoms of Low Blood Sugar:
  • Much sweating.
  • Feeling hungry.
  • Trembling.
  • Pale color.
  • Dizziness and lack of concentration.
  • Hear palpitation.
